Online Course Development Training – Summer & Fall 2015

These workshops take place during the spring for faculty developing courses for Summer or Fall 2015 semesters.

 

Workshop 1 – Designing Backwards and Developing Course Learning Objectives

•  Wednesday, February 11 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm, Bulger 120

•  Thursday, February 12 from 12:30 – 2:30 pm, Bulger 120

 

In this workshop, we will discuss academic goals and the concept of using Backwards Design to craft course objectives. In addition, will evaluate sample objectives and develop behaviorally based learning objectives for courses that are being developed or taught. Please bring the syllabus for the course you are developing so that we can refer to the student learning outcomes. Presented by Ginger Bidell

Workshop 2 – Designing Backwards and Creating Authentic Assessments

In this workshop, we will discuss the concept of using Backwards Design to link assessments to course objectives, rubrics, and learning experiences in an online environment. We will also discuss and evaluate the benefits of providing students with authentic assessments. Presented by Ginger Bidell

Workshop 3 – Locating and Using Electronic Resources in Your Online Course

This workshop will provide guidance for locating electronic resources for online courses. Attendees will learn about Buffalo State resources for video, audio, images, and e-books. In addition, they will be introduced to a number of Open Education Resources. Presented by Ginger Bidell, Ken Fujiuchi, and Leah Galka.

Workshop 4 – Utilizing Universal Design to Organize your Online Course

In this workshop, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will be introduced. Knowing that diversity is the norm not the exception, UDL considers the needs of the broadest possible range of users from the initial phases of online course development. Attendees will become familiar with UDL Best Practices and strategies for organizing accessible online course content.  Presented by Ginger Bidell

Workshop 5 – Interacting With Your Online Students

This workshop will include a discussion of the various types of interaction within the online learning environment. We will also discuss the importance of interaction and its impact on student motivation, participation, and success in online courses.  Presented by Ginger Bidell

Workshop 6 – Follow-up Reflection Discussion

This session will include a reflection discussion in which attendees will share successes and challenges they are experiencing with their online course. Attendees will also share strategies and suggestions for improving facilitation techniques and online course design.  Presented by Ginger Bidell
